CST300 Module 2 January 15th - January 21st

Part 1

My top 3 area I feel I am "best" at are effective study skills, making and revising a schedule, and where to study. The 3 area I feel like I'm really bad at is definitely when to study, studying for recitation courses, and how to use my time. I feel I'm at my best when I stick to a schedule but sticking to a schedule can sometimes be hard as things tend to come up and I have to move things around but managing a chaotic schedule has become the norm since I've had to juggle school, work, and fatherhood.

Part 3

Project management involves planning, organization, and executing tasks to achieve your project goals timeline and meeting budget. Three attributes of project management known as "project management triple constraint" are time, scope, and cost. Any change in one attribute impacts the other two.

Two essential tools for project management are the Work Breakdown Structure and the Gantt Chart. WBS is a framework that breaks down projects into manageable components. Gantt Chart complements the WBS by transform projects into a visual timeline.

Part 4

Three projects that stood out to me were OtterParsing, DriveDiary, and Out of Mana.

OtterParsing parses resumes which helps streamline the recruitment process by extracting candidates resumes. While the program works, it can be more effective through the use of machine learning to build models on finding effective/ineffective candidates to weed them out. The presentation itself was pretty cool as it demonstrated multiple real world applicability.

DriveDiary is a tool used for tracking gas usage and vehicle maintenance to understand how maintenance can impact a vehicles longevity and reliability. Overall I thought the idea was good in theory but it'll be hard for people to constantly log these data daily but if it were to be a standard feature that can be added to modern car with android auto or the iphone version and it links with your cars data, that would streamline the process. Overall the presentation was cool, I like graphs and charts.

Out of Mana is a roguelike game. Recently a lot of these genre types has been trending lately so it caught my attention as I also like to play these kind of games. As usual with these games balance is always an issue and that's one major critique I have when it comes to improvement. The presentation was cool, always fun to see a solo project passion but they could likely polish the game more to bring out more quality and interest.

Part 5

For this week's lecture we watched three videos where we are supposed to briefly summarize them in our journal. The first being "The future is faster than you think" which goes over how fast our technology is moving forward and how it is transforming business models and how much quicker our computation power is. The second being "Trends in Computing and Software Development" which goes over the software engineering industries, it's challenges, and the trends that help shaped software development. The third being "Introduction to Project Management" where it goes over what project management is and introduces us to some project management terminology and how to successfully bring a project to completion through good project management skills.

We also went over effective study strategies, my specific study strategy was to not put a time on how long I should study as time spent studying doesn't always equal to effective studying. We also used the outline draft for our industry analysis outline to start our draft which was definitely a challenging thing to do. We also had to peer review two of our team members draft as part of the assignment. This week was especially challenging for me specifically as I did not get to spend much time as I would like on any of the assignments due to unforeseen events.

  1. Hi Neng!

Juggling school, work, and fatherhood sounds hectic and difficult. However, I think that you are doing an amazing job! I hope that you are able to take care of yourself, despite working every single day of the week. If possible, I think that you could maybe expand the amount of time spent on School Work. However, I see that your weekly schedule is already very tight so I just hope that you are able to accomplish all that you want during your daily routines.
